Cheese Sandwiches

I am very happy to allow Gretchen to get on her soap box and voice all kinds of wonderful opinions, but I just couldn't sit this one out. Admittedly, I did not read the entire article and I did absolutely no research whatsoever. That being disclosed...

There are school districts that are serving a cold cheese sandwich, a fruit and milk carton to those children who have delinquent lunch accounts. If they qualify for a free lunch, they are not affected. One child doesn't wan to go back to school, another wants to get sick when she eats it... I'm sorry, but let's man up and deal with it!

I understand that it may embarrassing for the child (welcome to school!) and they are young, so may not totally understand the situation, but please. Mom and dad failed to teach gratitude, first of all. Then to not pay what they owe... And why can't they just pack a lunch? Certainly not cheaper than free, but way better.

I know I am falling drastically short on my argument, and given time, I may actually try harder to explain my complete lack of sympathy, but I needed that off of my chest. I think we, as a society, have such a jaded perspective & major entitled issues, and all we do is pass that along to our children. What would have happened a hundred years ago in a one- room schoolhouse? The child would probably gone home, or just hungry. Of course, they also would be getting a much better education....

I promise to try and let Gretchen handle the soap boxes!

My kids would love it if they had a dilinquent lunch account. They actually enjoy cold cheese sandwiches way more than their grilled counterpart. We have hot lunches in our school though...sometimes even leftover chicken pot pie or spaghetti (which they don't like) talk about a sense of entitlement and no gratitude. They're just born that way, but they sure don't get away with it at the Masquelier Academy! :)

So I do know what you are saying, but my stepmom works in an elementary school and there I think they are cruel. If the parent does not pay they give these little kids half of a normal lunch. The kids are ridiculed and still hungry and don't understand why their inadequate parents haven't paid their lunch bill. I hate it for little 6 year olds who have to suffer for their parents stupidity. This is the other side of the soapbox I guess. I definitely think they should be grateful, but I doubt these parents would teach gratefulness since they don't practice responsibility themselves! Did that sound a little socialist to you? Sorry don't tell your husband. I promise I am a Conservative.

Gretchen, I totally understand what you are saying. My disgust lies solely with the parents. I agree that the kids should still get a full lunch, but maybe a cheaper alternative to the hot lunch. Anyway, this is why I let you handle the "hot button" issues! I just let people know about my messy, crazy home!
